My 28th Year, In Summary

July 26, 2016 by Jess Gitner

I turned 29 yesterday. It was as low-key and uneventful as I could've dreamed of for a Monday, aside from the monumental—in my head—accomplishment of changing my own windshield wiper blades.

28 was filled with lots of those kinds of small but triumphant tasks. Finding a handyman, fixing slipping windows, killing ants, almost killing (and sometimes actually killing) plants and bringing them back to life, buying boring stuff that excites me, like wi-fi thermostats and garbage disposals.

My life isn't quite as dull as I make it sound, but here's a mix of some this past year's happenings—happy and sad, exciting and banal—as culled from my Google Calendar, without which I would be lost and aimlessly wandering through life.

In my 28th year, I:

  1. Got my first and fourth tattoo
  2. Attended my first funeral
  3. Traveled to Canada (Montreal), Arizona (Phoenix/Sedona), Minnesota (Twin Cities), New York, Tennessee (Memphis/Nashville), North Carolina (Asheville)
  4. Started working out
  5. Ran a sub-8:00 mile
  6. Went camping
  7. Went to jury duty
  8. Saw five concerts (Aimee Mann, Le1f, Beach House, Bone Thugs and Harmony, Ratatat)
  9. Attended three weddings
  10. Saw one play, one musical, and one movie (in theaters)
  11. Wore a dress for the first time since 2013
  12. Became a pescatarian... with a few exceptions for BBQ ribs and bacon
  13. Took 11 days of vacation
  14. Painted a piece of art for my living room
